Viagra keeps baby Hannah alive

March 30, 2007

A baby is being treated with Viagra to keep her alive after being born with a condition so rare it affects just one in every hundred million people.

Hannah MacDonald has been given the drug – which is more commonly used to treat male impotency – to help her battle for survival.

The 16-month-old was diagnosed with Chromosome Deletion Syndrome – where a part of a vital chromosome is severed and missing – when she was just four days old.

The condition means she suffers from severe heart problems and is unable to eat, drink or sit up and has already had to undergo five major operations, twice for open-heart surgery.

The sildensil drug – better known as Viagra – is fed through a tube in Hannah’s stomach which opens up her veins and allows the blood to flow freely around her heart.

Mum Rebecca, 22, from Tamar Street, Easington Lane, said: “The drug is used to treat a lot of babies and children with heart problems because it’s so effective in pumping the blood round.

“There are lots of different types of the drug, which is more commonly known as viagra, and Hannah has been treated with one of those types.”

Hannah’s condition is known to affect just 65 other people in the world, but, although it is genetic, it is not hereditary, which means neither dad Mark, 32, nor Rebecca – who have four other healthy children – have passed it on to Hannah through their own genes.

Doctors have told them that although most children with the condition suffer from congenital heart disease, Hannah’s heart problems are far more complex than the norm, which makes her condition even more rare and her treatment more complicated.

Hannah underwent her first heart operation at just 12 days old. This was followed by another just a few weeks later to repair a vital duct which doctors discovered had began closing.

Hannah then underwent a third heart operation on St Valentine’s Day last year and just weeks after that a fourth where doctors attempted to fit a micro valve into her heart, but the youngster was just too tiny for the procedure.

Since then Hannah, who has three sisters, Lily, four, Sophie, eight, Lauren, 12 and a brother Jack, seven, has undergone a fifth operation and will have to endure more surgery to repair her heart valves.

Viagra for Females To be Released This Week

March 28, 2007

A female version of Viagra, called Intrinsa, will become available for women this week. The new drug is intended to change the sex lives of women.

Intrinsa will initially be available only on prescription for post-menopausal women diagnosed with sexual problems.

It is, however, possible that the patches will later become an over the counter drug that can be used by younger women without sexual problems who want to boost their libido.

The new drug treatment for women will work by letting loose the male hormone testosterone through the skin and into the bloodstream.

The patch, which is about the size of an egg, is put on just below the navel and is changed twice a week.

Intrinsa’s manufacturer, Procter and Gamble, says that the patch helped boost the sex drive of hundreds of women in trials. It also increased the amount of sexual activity they experienced.

Positive results were also found in menopausal women who had been diagnosed with hypoactive sexual desire disorder. This condition causes sexual activity to be reduced thereby causing psychological distress.

Tests also showed that the drug worked on women who suffered from a loss in sex drive due to a hysterectomy. \

According to Phillip Hodson, author of “How to Make Great Love to a Woman, “This is the first medication that is going to have an effect on women’s libido. There are some women who say they are no longer interested in sex, then you find their testosterone levels are extremely low. Those women will probably experience the reconstruction of their sex lives.”

Hodson does warn, however, that medication can’t solve emotional problems which may be the root cause for a woman’s low libido.

The Intrinsa patch works by increasing the level of testosterone in a woman’s blood. Even though it is the male sex hormone, it does naturally occur in women also.

Experts say that the therapy would help women having a hysterectomy and others who have premature menopause before the age of 50.

Procter and Gamble decided to make a patch instead of a pill, which would have led to too high a dosage. This would avoid the unfavorable effect of testosterone which can cause increased body hair and liver disorders.

Procter and Gamble says the patches will help women with Female Sexual Disfunction, or FSD.

Unlike Viagra, however, the patch does not work immediately and will take weeks to begin its effect.

Massive haul of drugs in our jails is revealed

March 23, 2007

Cannabis, heroin, ecstasy and Viagra worth thousands of pounds have been seized from Northern Ireland’s jails in the past three years, the Belfast Telegraph can reveal today.

The most popular drug for inmates is cannabis, with almost 2kg of the drug - with a street value of around £10,000 - found in Maghaberry, Magilligan and Hydebank prisons from January 2004.

Other drugs, including cocaine, LSD, Valium, diazepam and steroids have also been seized by prison guards.

The findings, released to Ulster Unionist MP Lady Sylvia Hermon in response to a parliamentary question, reveal the scale of the problem of highly-addictive drugs available inside Ulster’s prisons.

Lady Hermon called on Prisons Minister Paul Goggins to explain what steps he was taking to prevent the use of drugs in the province’s jails.

Mr Goggins said: “The Prison Service collates monthly statistics from each of the establishments, broken down by drug types and quantities found. A quarterly report is presented to the management board analysing the trend over the previous three months. Figures outlining the number of voluntary drug tests and the pass and failure rate are also provided.

“Prevention methods used by the Prison Service include the searching of visitors and inmates, the use of passive drug dogs, deployment of specialist equipment and trained staff, the use of CCTV in all areas and the collation of intelligence in liaison with other criminal justice agencies.

“An addictions manager has been appointed to implement the service’s revised alcohol and substance misuse policy, and she will take up her post soon.”

Recently, the Belfast Telegraph revealed that, on numerous occasions, visitors were caught attempting to smuggle drugs into prison.

One woman on a visit to Hydebank had concealed 10 temazepam tablets, three LSD tablets and a quantity of cannabis inside a baby’s nappy.

Another visitor threw a quantity of drugs over a fence at Hydebank and then phoned an inmate to tell him where he could find it.

It was also revealed that urine was discovered in hidden containers during several cell searches. It is believed the urine was being kept to be used during random drugs tests.

Viagra Drug May Help Improve Exercise Capacity in Pulmonary Fibrosis Patients

March 17, 2007

UCLA researchers have found that Viagra may help patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, an incurable disease characterized by progressive scarring in the lungs, which often leads to a lung transplant.

Published in the March issue of the journal Chest, the research shows that more than half of the patients treated with Viagra, also known medically as Sildenafil, improved their walking distance by at least 20 percent during a standard test to measure lung function.

“Over five million worldwide suffer from this devastating disease, so we are hopeful that this drug may prove an effective therapy for pulmonary fibrosis,” said the study’s principal investigator, Dr. David A. Zisman, medical director of UCLA’s Interstitial Lung Disease Program and assistant professor of pulmonary and critical care medicine at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA.

Many patients with pulmonary fibrosis also have pulmonary hypertension, which constricts arteries and lessens blood flow to the lungs, resulting in diminished lung capacity and breathing difficulties. According to Zisman, Sildenafil may help breathing by opening or dilating blood vessels to allow more blood flow to the lungs.

In this pilot study, 14 idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis patients initially took a standard six-minute walking test. All patients were then given oral Sildenafil therapy for three months, followed by a second walking test to gauge performance changes.

Researchers noted that 57 percent of the patients improved their walking distance by 20 percent or more. The average improvement in walking distance was 49 meters (161 feet).

Eleven patients completed the study. Only two patients experienced side effects and had to stop the medication — one due to diarrhea and the other due to abnormally low blood pressure.

“In this small pilot study, the drug was well-tolerated,” said Zisman. “The next step is to confirm this finding in a large, randomized clinical trial.”

The study was funded by the National Institutes of Health.

Americans stuffing their pets with drugs

March 11, 2007

With aging, it’s become a routine faithfully endured by the Guffords. Each day starts with a blood sugar check and a shot of insulin. Then a couple of pills, maybe mashed into a bowl of tuna and canned carrots. Mixed with dry chow.

All for their 12-year-old dog.

Brownie takes more drugs than his human companions put together. He has been medicated in recent months for diabetes, infections, high blood pressure, and his finicky gut that rebels at red meat. Since 2005, he has taken drugs for everything from anemia to a spider bite.

“He’s our baby, he’s a family member, I would want somebody to do that for me,” explains Ann Gufford.

She estimates spending $5,000 over the last two years on medicine for her baby, a mixed beagle-cocker spaniel. He has lost a couple of steps on the squirrels outside their little home near Goldsboro. His hearing is failing. Still, without some of the drugs, he’d probably be gone.

“You cannot put a price on that,” says Mrs. Gufford.

“And I don’t want to,” adds her husband, Ben.

Americans have begun to medicate their dogs, cats and sometimes other pets much as they medicate themselves.

They routinely treat their pets for arthritis, cancer, heart disease, diabetes, allergies, dementia, and soon maybe even obesity. They pick from an expanding menu of mostly human pharmaceuticals like steroids for inflammation, antibiotics for infection, anti-clotting agents for heart ailments, Prozac or Valium for anxiety, even the impotence drug Viagra for a lung condition in dogs.

Increasingly, they buy at people pharmacies or online and sometimes pay with health insurance.

Fake Viagra pills seized in port blitz

March 8, 2007

Cairo - Egyptian customs officers at the port of Nuweiba seized a million imitation Viagra pills and aphrodisiacs on Wednesday in a refrigerated truck registered in Syria, a customs source told reporters.

The pills and the aphrodisiacs, worth an estimated 12 million Egyptian pounds, had been concealed in the vehicle, the source said.

The nature of the aphrodisiacs was not revealed.

The Syrian driver of the truck was arrested.

Egypt authorised the sale on prescription of the male erectile dysfunction drug Viagra in December 1999.

Fake pills originating in Syria, Yemen, China and India are also available at a lower cost than the real thing.

Too hard on Viagra

March 2, 2007

There are recreational drugs, such as pot and alcohol, and then there are what I call “wreck-reational drugs such as crack and crystal methamphetamine. The latter has become somewhat of a plague in the gay party scene and a ubiquitous shadow in gay online pickup sites where users are often looking to PNP (party and play) or “ski.

Like all club drugs, crystal has a cute nickname  —  Tina  —  and has a powerful allure. Users can dance or socialize for hours without feeling fatigued and it greatly enhances one’s sex drive. The downside is that users can stay up for days, become irritable and the toxin is highly addictive.

Male consumers of Tina often have a difficult time maintaining erections. Enter Viagra, the miracle drug that not only helped Bob Dole, but currently keeps drug-crazed nights from becoming dull. Today’s modern druggie can now inflate, mate and gyrate with ease, all while enjoying Meth’s speedy euphoria.

This drug combination has led to a spike in HIV-infections. One study of gay men in San Francisco showed that 36 percent of all Viagra users combined its use with other drugs including meth. Five other studies of homosexual men found an increase in unprotected anal sex with a partner of unknown or serodiscordant HIV-status among Viagra users, with users twice as likely to almost six times as likely to engage in this high risk behavior.

IN RESPONSE to this phenomenon, the AIDS Healthcare Foundation, the self-described largest AIDS healthcare, prevention and education provider in the United States, filed a lawsuit against Pfizer Inc., the manufacturer Viagra.

AHF claims that Pfizer is marketing Viagra as a recreational drug to younger men who do not suffer from erectile dysfunction. The healthcare group points to an ad campaign that asks, “Want to improve your sex life? They also highlight ads placed in major daily newspapers that show virile middle-aged men smiling under headlines such as, “What are you doing New Year’s Eve? and “Be this Sunday’s MVP.

“Pfizer’s direct to consumer marketing of Viagra as a drug to enhance sexual performance is primarily aimed at men who don’t necessarily suffer from a clinical diagnosis of erectile dysfunction, and we believe it is not only irresponsible, but also illegal, especially in light of the drug’s known use as part of a ‘circuit party cocktail’ of drugs that is fueling the spread of STDs and HIV, said Michael Weinstein, president of AIDS Healthcare Foundation.
Internet Pharmacy - Buy Pharmacy at reasanoble prices.Internet Pharmacy provides confortable and easy way to order pharmacy via internet.I can certainly sympathize with AHF’s worthy goal of lowering the HIV infection rate, but I think they are terribly misguided with this lawsuit.

First, so what if Viagra is marketed as a recreational drug? Pfizer has afforded your average Homely Joe the ability to perform in bed like porn icon John Holmes. This is great news and reason to celebrate! Why should a person have to have a diagnosis of E.D., before he can enhance his sex life and that of his partner?

Let’s face it, the use of Viagra today is similar to cranberry juice —some people drink it because of its health benefits (it is good for the bladder), while others imbibe because it tastes good.

Personally, I think the FDA should drop all pretenses and allow Viagra to freely market to younger 40-something men who do not have E.D., but can use a boost in bed.

OF COURSE, there is the potential for abuse by Viagra users who mix it with Tina. But, whatever happened to people taking personal responsibility for their choices and actions — including the consequences? Pfizer is not forcibly placing the little blue pill in the mouths of drug abusers with instructions on how to ingest methamphetamine.

In a free country, people must be allowed to make mistakes — even if they are fatal. It is insulting to gay men to suggest that they are so weak and infantile that they can’t stay away from this deadly drug on their own volition.

The message sent by AHF’s lawsuit is that gay men need a busybody Nanny-state to limit risks and keep them safe. While they are at it, why doesn’t AHF sue the maker of small sugar spoons because they are used to cook meth?

AHF was on the right track when they ran an ad campaign with the tagline: “Viagra + Crystal Meth = Rx for HIV Infection. In combating this scourge, education is the answer. If you inform gay men that a drug will likely cause a loss of job, partner, teeth and even life, most will stay away.

While this lawsuit is well meaning, it is unnecessarily hard on Viagra, while we should instead be hard on ourselves for not speaking out more forcefully against this destructive poison
