Mankind correct … let us celebrate

November 30, 2006

Out of every legit email message you get in your Inbox, how much of it would you say is spam? 20%? 50%? While it can vary a lot based on your activities and type of filtering, the worldwide average is stunning. A whopping 90% of email has been reported as spam. An U.S. email security company, Postini, performed a study and came to the conclusion that spam has been on the rise the past few months, nearly tripling the amount sent worldwide:

His company has detected 7 billion spam e-mails worldwide in November compared to 2.5 billion in June. Spam in Britain has risen by 50 percent in the last two months alone, according to Internet security company SurfControl.
That is beyond bad, that is sickening. Blaming 80% of that volume on a small number of “illegal gangsâ€?, even if those numbers are remotely accurate it’s a sad state of affairs that people must deal with such volume of useless junk.

Is it really possible to stop it? After all, if nobody ever replied to a spam mail, there would be no incentive for these criminals to mail them out. Which means somewhere along the line, one of those millions of spam-laden Inboxes is replying to it. While many countries are enacting laws to prevent and attack spam, and companies are becoming more aggressive in fighting it, there are many who think that simply isn’t the correct approach:

It will only end when people stop buying diet pills, herbal highs and sexual performance enhancers, said Dave Rand, of Internet security firm Trend Micro. “The products they are selling by spam are exactly the same products that they sold in the Middle Ages,” he said. “This really is a human problem, not a computer problem.”
Is he right? Quite possibly. An international problem, however, requires an international solution. The situation will probably never change until companies and legal agencies across the world begin working together.

India is ripe for US counterfeit market

November 24, 2006

Counterfeit goods are estimated to be a 500 billion dollar market worldwide, with 60% of the merchandise heading to the United States. US officials say this is not just a case of customers being ripped off on branded handbags and shoes; it could threaten national security through links to crime and terrorism. India, despite its expanding manufacturing sector, is not yet a center of counterfeiting but it’s showing up on the radar of US customs and security officials.

China is by far the biggest supplier to the estimated 300 billion dollar market for counterfeit merchandise in the United States, accounting for over 80% of seized goods in fiscal 2006, followed by Hong Kong, Taiwan, Pakistan and South Korea. But US authorities are starting to worry about fake computer and network hardware from India; this category made it to the Top 10 list of seized goods for the first time this year.

US Immigration & Customs Enforcement Officer, Marc Raimondi, told SAW, “India is a massive economy. They do a lot of manufacturing, therefore they certainly are ripe for having counterfeiting and piracy challenges.

US Customs and Border Protection, Christine Hogue says, “We are actually working on sending out some of our officers, our industry officers to go out there and train the customs officials, to show them what we work on and how successful we have been, and what India might be able to use to be just as successful on their end.

Counterfeit medicines are also emerging as a major concern. Pfizer’s drug Viagra is the most widely counterfeited drug in the world. Soon after its launch in 1998, India became the biggest source of the active ingredient used in the drug. While Pfizer says India is not a source of counterfeit Viagra, Indian companies may be contributing to the global counterfeit trade through their legitimate businesses.

Vice President, Global Security, Pfizer, John Theriault says, “If there is an issue, it might be the availability of active pharmaceutical ingredient that illicitly finds its way from India to counterfeiters. In saying that, I don’t mean to imply at all that there’s any kind of responsibility on the part of Indian companies.

The counterfeit goods market is estimated to make up over 6% of global trade. And with the holiday shopping season kicking off in the United States this Thanksgiving holiday weekend, some customers hunting for bargains may find their shopping bags filled with some surprises they hadn’t bargained for

India perched atop fake drugs list

November 22, 2006

MUMBAI: Another first for India, but this one leaves a bitter taste. India has been listed by the European Commission (EC) as the country which supply lion’s share of counterfeit drugs in the Europe.

According to the statistics presented by EC last week on the fake goods seized in Europe during 2005, India has been listed first in the section of medicines with supplying 75% of the total fake drugs seized. Egypt takes the dubious second slot,   accounting for 7% of fake drugs seized.

Surprisingly, China, which accounts for more than 60% of the number of all goods seized, stands is in third place, with only 6% of the fake drugs.

Apart from fake drugs, India has been mentioned only for fake ready-to-wear clothes with a share of 3%. In terms of number of fake drug consignments seized, India stands third with 4%, after Indonesia (15%) and Egypt (5%). Out of the 75 million articles seized in 2005, fake goods from India accounts for only 2%.

The apparent contradiction in highest quantity of fake drugs being seized from India and largest number of fake consignments originating from Indonesia is mainly due to a unusually large number of small consignments from such countries.

In European Union, 26,000 cases had been registered during last year, which corresponds to an increase of 20% over the 2004 figure.

The wider range of products exported from India including antibiotics, cancer cure drugs, anti-cholesterol tablets.

However, as per the report, Viagra still remains the favorite pill of fake drug dealers all over the world. Fake condoms and HIV and pregnancy testing kits are other goods mostly exported to Europe. For an instance, counterfeits of a much sought after cardiovascular drug consisted of a mixture of brick dust, the yellow paint used to mark roads in order to give it a colour similar to that of genuine medicine and furniture polish to give it a nice shiny finish.

According to the report, fake drug dealers have started using new transport routes in order to evade customs control.

A 350 kg consignment of fake drugs, seized in the UK, was dispatched from China. The transit route was through the UAE and UK, and the final destination was Bahamas.

“We are working our best against counterfeit drugs in India and various other countries. However, the counterfeiters in countries like Bangladesh or Hong Kong put the label ‘Made in India’ in packets. So how the officials can confirm the drugs are manufactured in India, said DG Shah, general secretary, Indian Pharmaceutical Alliance.

Another expert said such reports are part of a ploy to malign India’s image as a leading generic drug manufacturing hub and the outsourcing hub for research works.

Sex-killer’s Viagra-style dose outrages

November 21, 2006

SOUTH Australian Health Minister John Hill says he was “furious” to learn convicted sex killer Bevan Spencer von Einem was prescribed a Viagra-style drug in jail.

Mr Hill yesterday immediately banned such drugs in the state’s prisons, News Limited newspapers report.

He also ordered the Crown Solicitor’s office to investigate whether any laws or internal regulations were broken by the doctor who prescribed the erectile dysfunction drug Cialis to von Einem.

The doctor, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was suspended late yesterday by Health Department chief executive Tony Sherbon while an inquiry was conducted, according to News Limited.

Cialis is identical to Viagra but more potent. A 20mg dose is comparable to a 100mg dose of Viagra.

Mr Hill said the drug was prescribed to von Einem by the prison health service “without the knowledge of prison authorities for three months in 2003.

“I couldn’t believe the appalling judgment of the doctor who made the decision to prescribe convicted murderer and deviant von Einem with a Viagra-type drug three years ago,â€? Mr Hill said.

“I believe it is the biggest lack of judgment possible from a professional in a position of trust in an institution.

The doctor’s actions are revealed in a police statement made by a prisoner who alleges von Einem sexually assaulted him over 18 months

Drug firm to beef up security

November 10, 2006

MANSFIELD - The pharmaceutical distributor hit last weekend by sophisticated burglars who stole 1.8 million prescription pills says it will tighten security procedures in light of the huge heist.

“We are clearly going to review our security procedures,” said Micahel Kirkpatric, spokesman for AmerisourceBergen Corp. The company’s warehouse on Norfolk Street in the Cabot Industrial Park was broken into sometime last weekend by thieves who entered the building through the roof, police said.

The thieves possibly shimmied down water pipes to the floor of the 185,000-square-foot building and broke into an area enclosed in wire mesh, where they stole the pills, police said.

Detective Sgt. Sam Thompson said investigators believe at least three culprits were needed to pull off the burglary. The thieves disabled an alarm system and security cameras.

“To do what they did, you definitely had to have more than one person,” Thompson said.

No one was working inside the building at the time, and there were no security guards. Police said they received no reports if suspicious activity in the area.

Thompson said the thieves made off with the controlled substances either with a pickup truck or a box-type truck.

The detective said police are reviewing security video for clues to help solve the crime.

Local detectives are investigating the caper with the FBI, the federal Drug Enforcement Administration and state police assigned to the Bristol County District Attorney’s office.

When asked if police believe the crime was an inside job, Thompson replied that police are looking at all angles.

“It’s something we consider, but we’re not sticking to that,” Thompson said.

Police estimate the loss is in the millions of dollars based on the street value of the pills, which included all types, including painkillers and anxiety medication.

Kirkpatric said the company completed an inventory and assessed the commercial loss at $500,000.

AmerisourceBergen is among the four largest pharmaceutical distributors in the country with 28 facilities nationwide, Kirkpatric said.

The Mansfield facility employs about 100 people, he said.

Kirkpatric said a facility in Texas was robbed in 2003, which resulted in the federal conviction of the leader of a retail theft ring after 1,600 Viagra pills were sold to a government informant.

A similar theft occurred a year later, but Kirkpatric said the crimes were not a trend.

A U.S. Justice Department released in October said millions of pharmaceuticals are stolen each year, but that the thefts have leveled off in the past two years.

The availability and abuse of opiates, particularly heroin, but also black market pharmaceuticals such as OxyContin, Percocet, and Vicodin pose the most significant drug threats to the New England region, according to the report by the National Drug Intelligence Center.

New England, according to the report, has a large number of opiate addicts supplied by a well-established network of heroin and criminal pharmaceutical distributors.

Cocaine, particularly crack, is the drug of choice in some areas, including the inner-city neighborhoods of Boston and Providence, the report said.
